Imagine 12 Angry Men, but what if one of the jurors did it. The premise of the story is actually very interesting: a juror realizes, during the opening statements of a murder trial, that they were actually the person responsible for the victim’s death. The actual, moment-to-moment drama of the film was well-written, which makes it easy to miss its countless problems, not the least of which is that JK Simmons was severely underutilized. Several plot threads go nowhere. The entire legal process is depicted terribly, but these are not intended to be in-story shortcomings: both the prosecution and the defense offer extremely weak arguments in court, neither side followed through on even the most basic of preliminary research, the jury selection process is implausibly invasive, the titular juror’s own lawyer acts criminally, and the judge is laughably incompetent. How coincidental the two Black characters were both one-dimensionally angry and openly biased. How convenient the jury went from a split vote to unanimous verdict off-screen solely because the plot needed it to happen. Oh: this was directed by Clint Eastwood. That explains almost all of these problems.

The Creator

This is an ambitious, visually stunning film at times hindered by uneven pacing and clunky dialogue. It feels like the script needed one more pass to tighten it up. This very much could have benefited from another fifteen minutes of screen time to allow some breathing room throughout, especially in the rushed first half. Despite the film’s shortcomings, I enjoyed the movie, and want to see more like it.

Frankie Freako

I was really looking forward to this movie, but I was frustratingly disappointed. Frankie Freako is clearly an homage to Garbage Pail Kids—or possibly some more obscure movies of the same era—but this film just doesn’t compare, and GPK wasn’t that good to begin with. We have but seven characters: three of them are entirely uninteresting because of how one-dimensional they are, and just one has anything resembling an arc. There are only five events that happen over the course of the entire movie. This leaves us with several stretches of zero forward progression to the plot, and little in the way of new or interesting character interaction. There is not much to any of these elements beyond a meager ‘This is like what you might see in an 80s B movie!’ which is just not enough to carry a movie. All we’re left with is a barebones excuse to have ‘freaky’ (grossout? raunchy? it’s neither) comedy and silly puppets, but the humor is predictable, lacking any real bite, and the puppets/effects are a major step down from not just the director’s preceding film Psycho Goreman, but even from the actual 80s movie (GPK) which inspired Frankie Freako. You might get an idle smile or a small laugh from watching this, but you’re unlikely to be impressed or surprised by anything.

Dream Scenario

Obviously, it was pulling in a lot of his academic theory into the dreams—standing out from the pack makes you a target—but what it was supposed to mean, as far as our plot goes, was really unclear. We have him experiencing one of the dreams, being hunted, or the book signing, extolled only by these French weirdos. Is it just something about the downside of fame? And that’s it, with nothing deeper? It felt like Beau Is Afraid (which was written and directed by this film’s producer), but it doesn’t seem like it had that array of interconnecting ideas beyond the surface message.

Snack Shack

The first half is zany and hilarious. It’s so fast-paced, so much happens, that it might be easy to get lost. But this is to the movie’s benefit, because even the protagonist feels that way sometimes. You’re feeling what he feels. Then about halfway through, the story sharply changes tone, and not in a good way. It becomes an extremely predictable tale of serious seriousness. It feels like they haphazardly slapped together two unrelated scripts: a fun, original comedy about the get-rich-quick schemes of a couple teenagers, and a coming-of-age drama that sprints through every cliché in a race to be as generic as possible.

Butcher’s Crossing

What a letdown. The music and editing seriously carried this movie, because without those it was so incredibly scant. This could—or even should—have been a thirty minute short film. Something like a segment in The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. The actors played their characters well enough, but there was nothing for them to work with. The editor was clearly aware how thin the story was, because they reused shots several times, sometimes even flipping them to try hiding it.

Bloody Hell

The stylization was fun, but it went a little too hard early on. It was good they lightened up on it as the movie went on. The humor was also just surreal enough. They sprinkled it throughout the movie and never took it too far. The actors who played the creepy family definitely sold it, but they weren't terribly substantial, which I can't decide if that was a detriment. But making his conversations with himself literal helped distinguish the movie. I felt like something was missing. Maybe the dark humor needed to go a little further in places. Just, something small enough I can't put my finger on it, but it's just noticeable enough the movie felt like it lacked something.

I really have to give them credit for their commitment to the premise. A version of the movie from other writers or directors would have brought in dialogue or other characters without it really serving the story. So this was really engaging on that level, that they came up with this quasi-documentary idea and held firm all the way to the end. But I don’t think I really found it much more interesting than that? I dunno. There were a lot of genuinely hilarious moments, but I was more entertained by the oddity of the movie’s existence, rather than by the movie’s story or characters.

Beau Is Afraid

This is honestly really hard for me to settle on a rating. It was so full of details to catch, and there’s some really funny moments, but not much actually happens plotwise. I enjoyed this a lot, but ninety percent of my reaction during the unnecessarily long runtime was varying forms of ‘What?’ I want this to make sense, and I’m still looking for something to make the disparate sections of the movie click into place. I like that a lot of it was so surreal and weird, but that alone doesn’t make the overall movie good. But I liked it. I can’t help it. I was fully engaged.

Sorry to Bother You

While it has some shortcomings, I really liked this movie, and LaKeith Stanfield might be one of my favorite actors of the last decade. The main theme gets muddled once the plot goes off the rails. Their metaphor is taken to such an extreme it wraps back around to being literal, which makes it really easy to miss what the actual quote-unquote ‘message’ is supposed to be. But, it’s really easy to forgive this because the clever writing and charismatic acting pulls it all together. (Also, they directly mock the metaphor becoming literal at one point.)

They Cloned Tyrone

They Cloned Tyrone wears a cluster of influences on its sleeve (Get Out, The World’s End, Sorry to Bother You, and maybe, oddly enough, a touch of Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Father). Yet the film does not display any of these influences so strongly that it feels derivative or unoriginal.

While the opening act of the movie only shows us a single day in the lives of these characters—trade, pimp, lounge, shakedown, shootout—it becomes clear very quickly that this is all stereotype and routine to them, a trap they exist in without much thought. What another movie might throw at the audience as a twist in the third act is instead handed directly to the audience with the movie’s title. This decision to deflate the main conceit of the setting allows the audience to simply accept it as a part of the story and focus more on the Why, preventing the What from becoming a distraction. (I’m looking at you, Sorry to Bother You.)

The Northman

I felt like if we just mashed together Gladiator and Conan the Barbarian, this movie would be the result. Movies can still do the classic revenge plot in new ways, but this one just doesn’t offer us much that we haven’t seen before. I liked the sweeping landscape shots, and the world felt real, but everything was just so grey and visually boring. I enjoyed it enough for a first-time viewing, but the plot was so grim, dour, and predictable that I can’t see myself caring to watch it again.

Guns Akimbo

That camera sure loved spinning around. This movie was very tonally similar to Gamer: the characters live in a grimy, terrible world where everyone casually watches real people killing each other on livestream. But where movies like Gamer are miserable to sit through because none of the characters are likeable and the visuals are muddied and grey-brown, this movie got charismatic actors and cranked up the saturation. This is dumb and has very few surprises, but if that’s what you’re looking for it can be fun.

Kodachrome

Kodachrome was, bafflingly, presented to me as a comedy. This misleading introduction to the story didn’t detract from my overall experience, other than light confusion that eventually dissipated when I realized it had been severely miscategorized in advertising. The premise of the story is very clear from the outset: a dying father wants to spend his final days with his estranged son. The father requests his son to accompany him on a trip to develop a bundle of Kodachrome negatives before the technology is rendered irrevocably lost due to its obsolescence. The son, of course, refuses The Call, but is forced into accepting it thanks to a rather clichéd subplot: his job is on the line if he doesn’t close the deal with the Big Client, and his father’s manager inexplicably is able to pull strings to get the son a meeting with said client.

Pig

The advertising for this was wildly wrong: it was definitely not a John Wick-style rampage. It was much slower and more contemplative, an anti-revenge movie. It succeeded in telling a really emotional story, but some scenes, while appropriately gentle, slowed the story progression too much. But this is a minor flaw. I think this is one of Nic Cage’s best films.

Highlander

Highlander is undeniably a product of the early 80s, from the effects, to the music, to the setting. This isn’t automatically a bad thing, but being so heavily anchored to its era prevents it from aging gracefully.

While the cinematography is impressive in many places (especially compared to contemporary films), and uses clever wipe transitions, at times the editing is very choppy. This is most evident in a scene such as when Connor MacLeod experiences the Quickening when he first meets Ramírez. There are several quick cuts, each one having a character in a new location and position, despite establishing that no significant time passes between each cut. Such editing can be done to enforce a sense of disorientation on the viewer, but the effect is more awkward than deliberate.

Under the Silver Lake

This was bizarre. I never felt more like I was along for a ride with a movie than this. The story started off in its own little world, especially with its dreamlike noir music, but gradually re-railed itself and found a plot. I was hooked the whole way through, but it felt like it had no destination or goal until that last thirty minutes, and very few of my questions were really answered.

Prisoners of the Ghostland

There was no real story or character arcs. Most of the dialogue was complete word salad. The only actors who put any effort in were the ones who played Yasujiro, Bernice, and maybe Psycho. The characters who played a chorus from a Greek tragedy made it impossible to take seriously at any point. At least it has an incredible poster.

I think the movie did a great job showing us chemistry between the different actors, so all their relationships felt real. All the actors were perfect in their roles. But it really took its time getting anything going. There there were too many subplots, or at least too many little vignettes, which kept reestablishing the same character traits over and over. If they trimmed down some of that clutter I would’ve enjoyed it a lot more.

Whiplash

It strained credulity for me that a music professor could get away with such overt, public emotional and physical abuse for years. JK Simmons plays a compelling antagonist, which is what drew me in, but the same can’t be said of the protagonist, who was an obnoxious deterrent. By the end, I felt miserable and apathetic to what was going on.

But, I wasn’t a fan of the excessive gore (I’m usually not in movies), and the ending did feel like it wore thin, like it was running out of gags.

The digital effects were okay for the time period. It’s tempting to judge it based on similarities to The Matrix, but it came first and stands on its own well enough, and some of the effects hold up better. The pacing was non-stop, even in ‘slow’ scenes, sometimes enough it could feel a bit overwhelming.

The symbolism of Prometheus stealing fire had no purpose. This was not my kind of movie, but I appreciate the craft that went into it.

The camerawork that warped the edges of the image helped communicate that something was off but always just outta sight. This didn’t carry over into the third act, where you could tell they wanted to show more but left us just wondering what characters were reacting to out-of-frame. The movie needed a bigger budget there. I think the acting was fine across the board, but there wasn’t a lot to work with. None of the characters really grew or developed, and the brothers’ plot wasn’t enough for two hours.

The framework of the movie as an episode of a quasi-Twilight Zone anthology series was unnecessary; it made me take the plot a less seriously. The ending felt abrupt, like they didn’t quite know what to do, so they just had the characters stumble into the mystery’s revelation by sheer accident.

The plot of Birds of Prey is pretty simple: a mob boss needs a diamond with the keycode of a bank account inscribed on it. A pickpocket, by chance, gets the diamond and swallows it when she’s arrested. Harley Quinn needs to protect the pickpocket from the mob boss. The movie is made complex by two things. One, the overlapping stories of Harley Quinn, the pickpocket, a detective hunting the mob boss, a singer of the mob boss, and a mysterious assassin. Two, the multiple layers of flashbacks, backtracks, retreads, and setups.
